Common Factors Among Mesothelioma Patients

Many people have never heard of mesothelioma until it touches their life. If a doctor recently diagnosed you or a loved one with the disease, you are probably learning a lot of information in a short amount of time. It can feel overwhelming researching possible causes of asbestos exposure and what you can do about the disease.

It is likely one question has been nagging you as well. Why me? Why my family? It turns out there are several commonalities among patients of mesothelioma.

Here are a few:

  • Occupation: Occupational exposure to asbestos is the most common cause. Many occupations are at risk of asbestos exposure, but the most common are construction and manufacturing workers.
  • Gender: The overwhelming majority of mesothelioma patients are men.
  • Race: Nearly all are Caucasian men (95 percent).
  • Age: It takes 20 to 50 years for mesothelioma to progress to a level where symptoms are noticeable. At this time, most people with the disease are 65 and up.
  • Veterans: About 30 percent of patients are veterans. Hundreds of products containing asbestos were used in the military between 1930 and 1980. It is estimated that 5 million veterans were exposed to asbestos during that time.

In no way are these characteristics true for every mesothelioma patient. In fact, because of secondary exposure (or take-home exposure, as it is sometimes called) the disease can touch individuals who fall outside of these demographics. This happens when a person exposed to asbestos brings the fibers into a home on their clothes and a family member inhales it over time.

If your family is reeling from a mesothelioma diagnosis, you need to act quickly. Contacting an experienced mesothelioma attorney can help you protect your rights and possibly obtain compensation for your suffering.
