Conditions that cause an indoor slip-and-fall accident

You may not spend much time thinking about the potential of a slip-and-fall accident, but this could happen at any time. For example, you could slip when walking into your office. Or maybe you trip on your way through the grocery store or shopping mall.

Understanding the most common conditions associated with a slip-and-fall accident can help you prevent trouble. With this knowledge, you can keep your eyes open for anything that may get in your way.

Here are a few hazards to watch for:

  • Wet floors: It doesn't matter why a floor is wet, from a spill to a recent cleaning, this greatly increases the risk of a slip-and-fall accident.
  • Too much wax or polish: The use of wax and polish can help keep floors looking good, however, using too much is a hazard. Unfortunately, you can't always see this on the floor, thus making it more difficult to prevent trouble.
  • Applying wax on a slope or incline: It's difficult enough to walk on a sloping or inclining floor. If you add a slippery substance, the chance of an accident increases.
  • Bulging areas: For example, old carpet may begin to bulge, which acts as a trip hazard.
  • Curling rugs or mats: Many businesses have mats and rugs at the doorway (among other areas). A curled edge is a trip hazard.
  • Debris: Any type of debris, such as a newspaper or soda can, can cause you to lose your balance.
  • Damaged stair or handrail: When going up or down stairs, you expect the steps and handrail to be in good working condition. If this isn't the case, such as a broken or wobbly handrail, there's an increased risk of falling.
  • Defective escalators and elevators: An example of this is an elevator that jerks when starting or stopping.

Even when you do your best to watch every step you take, you could still be injured in a slip-and-fall accident. If this happens, stay where you are and immediately call for help.

After receiving medical treatment (or before, if possible), report the incident to the owner of the building. You can then learn more about your legal rights, as you may want to seek compensation for your injuries and other damages.
