Rock 'n Play Sleeper recalled after 30 infant deaths reported

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has linked over 30 infant deaths since 2009 to the Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play Sleeper, causing the toy company to issue a recall of its product. Parents of infants in Georgia should know about this because the recall is set to affect 4.7 million of the sleepers.

While Fisher-Price has not reported on what caused the infants' deaths, it is clear that the infants died while rolling around unrestrained in the inclined baby seats. All of the victims were 3 months or older, the age at which babies start to roll around.

At first, the CPSC had only cited reports of 10 fatalities. A Consumer Reports analysis, however, linked the sleeper to over 30 infant deaths between 2011 and 2016. The CPSC is now investigating these deaths in particular and will look into other inclined sleeper products. Those who have an incident to report involving the sleeper or any other nursery product can contact the CPSC.

One week prior to the recall, Fisher-Price and the CPSC jointly issued a warning about the product, prompting both grieving parents and representatives from the American Academy of Pediatrics to call and demand a recall. The toy company may soon be facing lawsuits. One family, whose 5-month-old son died in the Rock 'n Play Sleeper back in 2017, is currently negotiating with Fisher-Price.

When a defective product leads to injury or death, victims may want to see a lawyer who deals in products liability because knowledge of this area of law is essential to filing a lawsuit. Plaintiffs must show that the injury or death was caused by a manufacturing defect, design defect or marketing defect. It must also be shown that the plaintiff followed all instructions for the product. With a lawyer, the plaintiff may be able to achieve a fair settlement.
