Mesothelioma risk high even when asbestos exposure stops

There is no complete asbestos ban in the U.S. although many companies have stopped using the mineral and adopted protective gear for their employees. Unfortunately for former asbestos workers in Georgia and the rest of the nation, recent research shows that the risk of developing mesothelioma does not go down once asbestos exposure stops.

U.S. and Italian researchers reviewed nine previous studies on the cessation of asbestos exposure and the risk for mesothelioma. They found that the relative risk for malignant mesothelioma after asbestos exposure was much higher, 10 years later, than the risk for lung cancer.

Dust-sized asbestos fibers are thin and sharp and can lodge indefinitely in a person's tissues once they are inhaled. These fibers can be inflamed or irritated over time as well as cause iron to be released into the body, thus keeping the risk for mesothelioma high even when the risk for other asbestos cancers declines.

Since mesothelioma symptoms often do not appear until the cancer is in an advanced stage, those who have been exposed to asbestos will want to see a doctor as soon as possible. The doctor, once fully informed of the situation, can monitor their health and provide regular checkups.

Those who do develop mesothelioma may wonder if they can be reimbursed for their losses. This is where they may want to consult with a lawyer. If there are good grounds for a mesothelioma case, whether it is against an employer or against the maker of a product containing asbestos, the lawyer may be able to assist in the filing of a lawsuit.

The lawyer might hire investigators to gather proof against the defendant, and medical experts may help determine the extent of injuries and the cost of treatment. Victims may have their lawyer attempt to negotiate for a reasonable settlement or litigate.
