21 injured in shopping center in possible gas explosion

Georgia residents may be interested to know that just before 11:30 a.m. on July 6, firefighters in the town of Plantation, Florida, received a call about an explosion in a shopping center. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found an active gas leak with ruptured gas lines amid the debris. While it has not been confirmed yet, the incident was most likely a gas explosion.

The blast damaged several stores, including a gym and a pizza restaurant. The blast, which was reportedly heard and felt miles away, sent debris flying hundreds of yards. One person in a nearby parking lot hid under his vehicle to avoid being injured by the debris, which included parts of the shopping center's walls and roof.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities. However, 21 people were injured with 2 suffering injuries that were labeled serious. One of the victims incurred Level 1 trauma. Upon arriving, authorities made sure to turn off the gas to the surrounding area.

The explosion ignited the building, but the fire went out quickly after that; there were no visible flames to fight. Police are still investigating the incident.

Whether negligence was involved remains to be seen, but if it was, the incident may lead to more than one case under premises liability law. Property owners, be they home or business owners, have a duty to maintain a reasonably safe environment. If lawful entrants who use the property in a safe manner are nonetheless injured, they may be eligible for compensatory damages to cover losses like medical expenses and lost income. Victims may want to hire a lawyer for advice and guidance.
